3D cake effect

I want to make Thing. The rock super hero. How can I make the rock effect on the cake? Should I make a deep cake and cut "rocks" into it or should I bake a separate cake and add them to the top?

ROCK cake

It depends on what kind of cake you are making. Are you trying to make the super hero himself, or just a place he would live, or are you making him from the waist up? It's hard to give advice without knowing what you want to make. Let me know and I will try to help!
