Easy instructions for making an Elmo birthday cake:

Bake a sheet cake the size that you will need. With an icing filled bag and round tip, size #5, draw Elmo on the cake top. Cut the cake off around the Elmo shape.

Use the cut off pieces of cake to build up the eyes and nose areas so they a three dimensional.

Using white icing and star tip, size #18, cover the eyes. Next make orange icing and using star tip, size #18, cover the nose. Make black icing and use star tip, size #18 to fill in the mouth and the pupils on the eyes as shown on the above picture.

Finally make a red icing and fill in Elmo’s face.

I use paste or gel food coloring for the different colors of icing because it does not change the texture of your icing.

If you do not want to have to cut out the Elmo shape yourself, here is an elmo cake pan that you could use, then decorate the cake as shown above. Also try this other elmo face cake pan to create your cake.
