Frog Pond and Thomas Cake
This was for my son's 3rd birthday - he wanted a frog pond cake AND a Thomas the Tank Engine (Thomas the Train) cake, so I combined them in my own unique 2 tier design.
The base is a chocolate mud cake covered in lime green sugarpaste (fondant) icing which I coloured from white. The top layer is a vanilla custard cake with pale green sugarpaste coloured from white.
The train tracks are liquorice straps and liquorice bullets. The frog pond is filled with green jelly (jell-o) and has chocolate frogs, logs and rocks, with green reeds made from leftover lime green sugarpaste (fondant).
The Thomas is a real one from my son's train set! I added chocolate ladybugs and bees glued to the sides of the cake with royal icing.
This was my first fondant cake and it has some rough patches, but I am still very proud of it! When my 3 year old son saw it he said "oh wow I'm so happy" so that made it all worthwhile. I prebought the sugarpaste from a cake decorating store and it was chocolate flavoured and delicious.
