Getting coconut to stick on outside of cake

I am making a cake for my Dad for his birthday... the recipe his sister sent me told me that the cake is ugly but it tastes delicious. I don't want an ugly cake! I'd like to do a thick layer of coconut on the outside, but I'm having trouble finding a way to make it stick without affecting the taste of the cake. Any suggestions??

If you want a thick layer--I would do the buttercream and add coconut, and then once it is spread then take coconut and press to the still moist buttercream.
