How do you get rid of the bump around the middle of a cake where the layers meet?

by Tena

I have been decorating for quite a few years. I always trim the sides if the layers are uneven, I don't over-fill between the layers, I go around the "crack" with icing- like spackling, I crumb coat and I use a pizza roller to smooth. I still get a little bump where the layers meet. Is there anyway to get rid of this without using fondant?

if you are having the same prob. that i did i called it the buldge-like the filling was trying to push out in the middle... if this is the prob,
1.let cake cool 100%
2.fill & crumb coat
3.let it rest and settle the longer the better
sometimes i let it sit out or frig.
4.frost it,smooth it as much as you can,let it crust- then i use the viva to make it very smooth.
i found that if i did not let it "rest" i had the same prob.nearly every time.
i hope this helps-good luck and God bless

I'm picturing the sides of the cake where the icing holds them together... I may be wrong.

But if I need the icing smooth I use the Viva! paper towel. the heat from your hands can move the icing and that should work.

HOPE THIS HELPS

I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND IF YOU MEAN THE TOPS OF THE CAKES ARE HIGHER THEN THE BOTTOM? IF SO, JUST TRIM THE TOPS TO BE EVEN AND THEN PLACE THE TOP OF ONE ON THE PLATE OR BOARD. FROST IT WITH YOUR FILLING AND THEN PLACE THE OTHER CAKE YOU TRIMMED THE CAKE HUMP OFF OF TOP DOWN ON THE FILLING. YOU SHOULD THEN HAVE A NICE FLAT TOP OF YOUR CAKE TO WORK WITH..HOPE THIS IS WHAT YOU MEANT. NANCY OF CAL. EMAIL IF SO. nrcourtney@aol.com
