The dome (red body) is actually cake wrapped in red MM fondant. You can use any oven safe bowl. Simply spray it good before you put the cake batter in, about 3/4 full should do. Or you can use crisco and flour instead of the spray. Which ever you prefer, just be sure to grease up the bowl good so that it will pop out nicely after baked. I did all the fondant pieces 2 days in advance to give them ample time to dry since several of the pieces were pretty good sized. I simply left them on a cookie sheet on the counter. Putting the fondant in the fridge will help keep it pliable. The black food coloring I got right in the baking section at Walmart. I'm pretty sure the grocery stores carry it as well. I would also suggest investing in a couple pairs of latex gloves other wise your hands will be various colors for a day or two. I hope you enjoy making this cake as much as I did. :)

never made a cake from scratch by: candace
I am very excited to try and make this cake my kids for their joint birthday. I have never attempted to make a cake form scratch so I am a little nervous and I am not sure how you made the little confetti dome cake part. Also do you let the fondant stay out on the counter to harden over night or do you put it int the fridge? As for the black coloring is there a black food coloring or do you have to mix colors for that?

This cake was a big hit with my family and friends. And honestly, alot of fun to make. After several wedding cakes (which I have yet to try) you shouldn't have any problems at all. To answer your question, everything but the house itself (the red 'body' section) was made completely out of fondant. It was much easier and a whole lot less stressful then trying to shape pieces of cake and then adhear the fondant to it. I just set aside some time a couple days in advance to make the MM Fondant and to make all of the little doo-dads that make up the play house. It was very much like playing with play-doh. I think you'll find it very enjoyable. Best of luck and Happy Birthday to your little one. :]

Had a question... by: Linda
My son wants a Micky Mouse cake for his 3rd birthday. You have inspired me to make one with fondant (I was always afraid of it before) even though I have experience with cakes (made all my sisters wedding cakes and various others).
I had a question though. Did you make the glove and shoe in all fondant or is there cake under there too?
Thanks!
