Red Velvet cake decorating

I have been asked to make a red velvet cake for a birthday party. My question is, what frosting do I use? They want a Hawaiian themed cake, but I thought red velvet cake only has a cream cheese based frosting. I would like to use my buttercream since I can shape it and color it. Does anyone have a solution for me?

I just did one of these recently. I used the cream cheese for the filling, then iced the cake in vanilla buttercream. Cream cheese icing does not hold its shape very well; therefore is not good decorating icing. You get the taste of the cream cheese and the versatility of the buttercream. With the cream cheese, you should refridgerate this cake.

Cream cheese is the most used for Red Velvet. But your buttercream would be good too.

I have used Cream Cheese Candy flavoring with my buttercream and used it in place of Cream cheese frosting. It was well received.
