stenciling on a frosted cake

How long do I need to refrigerate my frosted cake before I can stencil my design on it? Also, what is the best way to make sure the stencil doesn't stick to the top of the cake? Thanks for any help.

Refridgerate your buttercream frosted cake until the icing has crusted. Once you spray on your design, the icing will become sticky so get it right the first time.
To stencil on a fondant cake, you can spray, paint with a brush, or spread royal icing onto the stencil. It will leave it looking like a velvet or suede design when you lift the stencil off.
