What is Crisco?

I am unfamiliar with Crisco in icing recipes. What is Crisco?

everyone seems to be saying Crisco is butter but the usa recipe I have for caramel frosting says half cup of butter half cup of Crisco so I don't see how it can be ,can anyone help me plz

i'm really confused i need to make fondant but crisco is required and live in india and in my locality i don't think so that crisco is available
so can i use butter?
and yes then which one salted or unsalted?

To my understanding, it is a brand of shortening found in America. Coming from Australia I think its a bit like Copha which is usually found very high in the butter section of our local supermarket.

me dear Indians, if you know how to whip milk cream in a food processor to make butter, u can use the same in cake and cake icing in place of shortning. it works great

margarine t i the. didnt understand that shortening. it is butter ffrom vegetable oil. therefore margarine.

I live in the uk and i think crisco is very similar to our white trex or white flora which are both vegetable shortenings.

Crisco is a pure white vegetable shortning. It is used in buttercream recipes. You can use part shortning and part butter, or if you want pure white icing, use just the shortning. The website wilton.com has both of these recipes. Hope this helps!

CRISCO COMES IN A CAN AND YOU MAY BE FAMILAR TO LARD OR FAT...IT IS A VEGETABLE OIL BUT IN SOLID FORM. COMES IN THE STORE WHERE THE COOKING OIL DEPARTMENT IS. YOURS MAY BE CALLED SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
