buttercream too soft ?

by Julia
(Indonesia)

I'm an early learner in Cake Decoration. I tried to decorate my cake with buttercream, but I think it's not working. I tried to make a rose, but failed because the buttercream was too soft, so the rose can't stand up. Whats wrong with my buttercream ?

my recipe

I use the same recipe every time and my icing almost always comes out great.

2 cups shortening (all vegetable)
2 lbs powdered sugar
4 tsp vanilla
milk.. i just eyeball it, adding it in until it is the right consistency.

cream your shortening and vanilla together really well, then gradually add your powdered sugar with milk. Careful, you will have a snowy effect if you don't cover your mixer with a kitchen towel.

TOO SOFT
by: KELLY

I have trouble with buttercream roses.
My first guess would be too much liquid as well.
Try adding more sifted sugar.

I can make really good roses out of royal icing. Try that and after you get the hang of it, and you will, then switch to the buttercream. It'll be easier.

And let the royal icing roses dry. Then you can just place them where you want them without worrying about messing them up. And they will stay good for a long time.

May be too much pure butter.
by: Lena, Kuching Malaysia

I used 1/3 shortening(Krimwell) and 2/3 of pure butter. Sometime can replace butter with marjerin.

Its either too warm or has too much liquid in it. Try cutting back on your liquid or adding some additional powdered sugar to thicken. If you add less liquid that is the best way to do that.
