When making a character cake with a character cake pan, do I put a thin layer of icing down before I make my stars on it?

Character cakes are easy and fun

Hi
I started with character cakes from cake tins. I found if you do put a thin layer of icing down first you lose the outline of the character to trace and follow when piping.

One of the first ones I ever did was bob the builder

Fun to make and easy to do with a cake tin :-)

'They' say you're supposed to but I never do.

I'm lazy and sometimes I don't have any extra icing left to do that.

YES I DO

WHITNEY, I FIND IT EASIER TO STICK TO THE CAKE WITH A THIN LAYER OF BUTTERCREAM FIRST. I THINK YOU CAN DO IT PLAIN, BUT TO ME IT IS A LITTLE HARDER TO HOLD ON...GOOD LUCK, NANCY OF CA
