combining fondant and regular icing

Is it possible to put fondant cutouts and fondant stripes on a cake frosted with a traditional wedding cake icing? Do I have to cover the entire cake with fondant to use the cutouts or will they stick to my regular icing? Any suggestions?

Very good advice!
You can stick with a bit of water or alcohol....

I added 2 topsy turvy cakes on here and they were buttercream with fondant.

Yes. I have done it several times. Just make sure you place it exactly where you want it because it sticks quickly and doesn't come off without also removing some of the icing. If the icing has already crusted when you want to add the cutouts, slightly dampen the back of the fondant cutout.
