Decorating with 'Gold Dust"

by Dana Zimmerman

Is there any product I can use to apply decorating dust to my cake other than vodka or everclear? I have heard using vodka, everclear, and even lemon juice. Can you please give me a brief history lesson on why it is necessary to use high alcohol content when applying dust? I would greatly appreciate it!!!!

The reason you need to use a liquid high in alcohol content is that it evaporates quiclky. If you use something without the alcohol, the painted surface remains sticky and may not dry.
If you don't want to use vodka or everclear, you can use lemon extract. {NOT LEMON JUICE}. Lemon extract also has a high alcohol content. I use lemon extract for use with all luster dusts and for fondant painting. I hope this helps!

I don't know about the alcohol content. But the package says you can use clear vanilla.
