What kind of food coloring do bakers use when painting pictures on cakes? Do they use powder food coloring mix with water? If so where can you buy different powder food coloring?

Painting on cakes
by: Deborah

I use gel or paste colors to paint on cakes. But instead of mixing with water, mix with either a liquer such as vodka or pure lemon extract which has a high alcohol content. I use the lemon extract. If you use water, the "paint" will not dry. You don't have to use much extract to dilute. It just depends on how deep you want your colors. I use artists paint brushes in different sizes. Only mix up a little dab at a time as it will evaporate quickly. Good luck!
