Gum paste or fondant?

by Debbie

I am going to make a Thomas the Tank Engine cake for my son and I am wondering if I should use gum paste or fondant for his face? I am not concerned about anyone eating the face and would like to know which one would be easier to work with and if the only difference with the end result is that the gum paste will be harder?

I melted white chocolate and then added a little black food coloring. I then poured it into a biscut cutter and put it into the freezer to harden. My son loved it and it tasted much better than fondant. The only fondant I like is homemade from marshmellows.

gumpaste or fondant?

You're right. the gumpaste would dry harder. You can mix a 50/50 mixture of gumpaste and fondant. It will dry a little harder and still be good to eat.
