Hello Kitty at the Beach Cake

Hello Kitty at the Beach Cake

Cake Flavor - This Hello Kitty at the Beach cake's flavor was a vanilla sponge cake with a nutella spreading in the middle. The temperature in Malta is presently reaching around 35 degrees, thus one would not risk using any creams or milks to decorate or fill the cake.

Due to high temperatures ( as mentioned above ), I do not use butter cream to crumb coat the cake but use marzipan instead. I found the to be the perfect option to serve as good base to sugar paste/fondant.

Background Design - The design idea came naturally as the birthday girl was having a pool party in celebration of her 4th birthday. Thus, the background design was purposely chosen to compliment the surroundings as detailed hereunder:

The Sky: Light blue sugar paste was used for the sky, topped with a few with sugar paste clouds. The sun's sugar paste was marbled yellow and orange to highlight the firey effect. It was done on kebab stick in order to be used vertically highlighting the birthday girl's age. The sun was decorated with gold edible balls.

The Sea: The mid part of the cake was covered in with fondant and topped with blue piping gel. This effect distinguished the blue sky and the blue sea giving a glossy (wet look) effect to the beach background.

The Sand: The bottom part of the cake was decorated in yellow fondant which was topped with light brown sugar to give the sandy beach a more realistic effect. Some pebbles and stones were added for a more natural shore effect. The girl's name on the sand was made in red and topped with spots to match Hello Kitty's bikini.

Hello Kitty Topper - The topper was also hand made out of sugar paste about 4 days before the cake was prepared to allow it to dry. Gum was added to the white sugar paste for extra dryness. Hello Kitty was dressed up in the same bikini as that of the birthday girl. In fact this was a huge surprise for the girl seeing Hello Kitty dressed up like her!

The frills were done by using a friller cutter and the frilling tool. The bow on the head was also made to match the bikini for a more complete, fab and fashionable look :)

This the first time I am taking part in your cake contests. Thanks for the opportunity.
