How do I frost a sticky cake without the top tearing apart?

by Alicia
(California)

I bake a cake in a 13 by 9 inch clear dish pan and I leave it on a cooling rack in the pan for a few hours and when I go to frost it the top of the cake is moist and wet and sticky. If I put frosting on it all it does is tear and it never turns out looking nice its just too sticky on top to frost after it's cool. How do I prevent the stickiness from happening?

how to frost a sticky cake
by: michelle

Hi there, firstly the cake should not be covered with something that will make it sweat while it is cooling down. Rather cover it with a clean tea towel.

If the cake is still sticky, you can take some butter cream to which you have added some milk to make it a little runny. Spread this runny butter cream thinly over the cake. This will hold the sticky, crumbly cake in place. Once this layer has set, you will be able to frost the cake.

Hope this helps.
