How to stick fondant onto sides of buttercream iced cake

My daughter wants a modern retro wedding cake but nobody likes the taste of fondant. She wants the look of fondant with cutout circles of gold and green stuck on to the sides of the cake which I will ice smooth with Italian meringue buttercream. I'm worried that as the icing reaches room temperature the fondant designs will slide off the icing. Please Help !

Attach a short toothpick at the back of the fondant so this will help to hold it on the cake even if the buttercream is soft.
