Pumpkin Patch Cake

Pumpkin Patch Cake

This pumpkin patch cake was for my Aunt. Since she has a fall birthday I thought pumpkins would be fitting.

I made 2 bundt cakes. I spooned out just enough of the batter to make mini-bundt cakes, which are almost as big as a cupcake.

After cooking, cooling and leveling, I iced between layers. I used the icing in a can and colored it orange.

I read on several websites that that is the way they did it.

Well, my advice is, DO NOT USE CANNED ICING!

It was as runny as soup. I added 1 lb. of powdered sugar and some meringue powder and it didn't help.

Just traveling in the car the big pumpkin slid almost off the cake board!
So next time I will stick with buttercream!

I tinted some icing yellow for the stripes on the pumpkins and some green for the grass.

I placed the big cake on the board and after that I iced the rest of the board with the green icing.
I used the grass tip and put grass around the pumpkins.
I did the 2 small pumpkins the same as the big one.

I used an ice cream cone for the stem on the big pumpkin. And used green icing.
And being heavy with icing, it fell all the way to the bottom so I put 3 of the mini cakes in the hole of the big cake for the cone to rest on. It seemed to work ok.

I also added green leaves. For the small pumpkins I just used icing for the stems.

I used the pre made candy letters and the pre made candy leaves.

Fresh cream
by: Lena, Kuching Malaysia

Hi Kelly,

Some places call it whipping cream or double cream. I like to use freshcream/whipping cream but of cause you have to adjust to the feel of it, it is slightly different from buttercream. I do use buttercream when my customer requested it. But most people here like freshcream.

Your Pumpkin Patch cake sound difficult to make but you have done a good job. There is an idea to smoothen your cake, that I learned from my icing class, is using a thin plastic film (Not too soft and not too hard), where you can curve it to the shape of Pumpkin and lightly touching it to the cake, then your lefthand just turn your turn table and you will get a very smooth surface.

Great Pumkin Patch Cake
by: Ann Neal

The cake is beautiful and very creative. I am agree with Nancy, stick with the buttercream. I like the bundt cake idea. You cannot tell you had any problems with your icing. It is a very creative cake.

CUTE..
by: NANCY

WHAT A CUTE IDEA, TO BAD WITH ALL THE ICING TROUBLE. I GUESS WE SHOULD STICK TO OUR OWN RECIPE. I ONLY USE CANNED IF I MAKE A PLAIN CAKE OR A FAST CAKE WITHOUT ANY DECORS. I BET THAT WAS A HEAVY CAKE WITH THE TWO TOGETHER. IT WAS CUTE THOUGH..BEST TO YOU, NANCY
