I ground up graham crackers in 3 ways
to creat different texture of the beach sand
I use it very fine on the beach and not so fine at the waters edge so it looks like rocks like at the waters edge.. reg grind and fine grind and ultra fine grind..

When I made a sand castle cake for my son's wedding I used brown sugar on the castle part and used Sugar in the Raw--a natural cane turbinado sugar from Hawaii for the sand on the beach. Everyone thought it looked great. I bought the sugar at the grocery store.

If you have a puree, put chips ahoys and sugar in and blend fine! Tastes great! You can do that with oreos and too!

To make sand, I normally use light brown sugar, very fine grated in a liquidiser to which I mix a bit of black edible glitter. It looks stunning.
Try in a small amount and see if you like the end result.

I'm not sure how you're making your cake but when I make a beach pudding cake (another version of a dirt cake) I use crushed vanella oreos or any type of vanilla cream cookie. Hope that helps

you could use the graham cracker crumbs (finely ground) and then mix in some brown sugar for a sparkle.
but if you don't have any graham crackers on hand any cookie or sweet cracker that is a tan color would work. even if they are a bit stale.

Check out the sand on my "Evan's Birthday Lobster Cake" on this site. I made the sand with gramham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, decorating sugar(the grains are large and it looks great in the sand)and a little bit of cinnamon for an added color. I have had people eat it with a spoon. Good Luvk

I would use cinnamon and sugar mixed together or you can use brown sugar or graham cracker crumbs finely crushed. Hope this works. I used cinnamon and sugar in a fondant sea shell and it looked just like sand...Nancy
