Easy instructions for this picture of a clown cake:
Bake the size sheet cake that you need.
With round tip, size #5 and an icing filled bag, draw the clown on the cake top.
Cut the cake away from the clown shape. You will use the star tip, size #18 to do all of the fill in work and the round tip, size #5 for all of the outline work.

Use red icing to fill in the nose and mouth. Use white icing to fill in the clown's face.
Make a reddish brown colored icing and using the star tip, make curved lines for his hair. Next fill in his collar and gloves with yellow icing.
Now make an orange icing and fill in all of the dots including the dot on his hat.
Make a purple icing and fill in the rest of his clown suit. Use black icing and fill in his shoes.
Change the tip on the black icing to the round tip and make tow eyes. Also make the smiley lines on his mouth.
Now use your purple icing and round tip and outline the sleeves and the brim of his hat.
Use yellow icing and outline his gloves.
Now with your white icing, make a highlight dot on the top part of each eye.
